Psicotrópicos Festival - Panel: Pop vs Populismus

PANEL

POP vs POPULISMUS

SUNDAY l MARCH 22, 2020

Festsaal Kreuzberg - Am Flutgraben 2

Moderator: Lukasz Tomaszewski (Radio Cosmo)

Participants: Oxa / Héloa / Rodrigo da Matta

Has Pop become unpolitical? Quite the opposite, according to author and radio host Lukasz Tomaszewski.

Just like the daily political discourse, Pop and Rap are increasingly shaped by linguistic brutalisation and reactionary positions. Homophobic and sexist lyrics keep finding their way into the charts.

However, more and more musicians worldwide are mobilising against right-wing agitation and exclusion. For WDR COSMO, Tomaszewski portrayed protagonists from Germany, Poland, the USA, Venezuela and Italy.

In Psicotrópicos Festival, he speaks with Jens Balzer and Oxa from Brazil.

How does the liberal music- and cultural scene in Brazil  experience the right-wing populist government of Jair Bolsonaro? And what strategies did they adopt in the fight against racism and homophobia?

Extravagant dance performance and an unmistakable voice: Oxa is an absolute exceptional artist.
Oxa stands for freedom, equality, tolerance and pure joy of life - you can feel that as soon as she enters the stage.

The Brazilian-born singer came for the musical in 2016 Tarzan to Germany and most recently worked for The Voice of Germany 2019 for a sensation. Especially their performance Lady Gaga's “Born This Way” left no one untouched, then they were their message for a common, equal world staged without discrimination with fake blood on the face.

In the quarterfinals, she floated in a ball from the Ceiling, surrounded by dancers swirled over the stage and made a very special statement with Elton Johns hit “I’m still standing”. Her appearances are hits on Youtube, her fan base is growing steadily.

Four years ago, Oxa won a Brazilian dance show and thus the attention of pop legend Jennifer Lopez. As a background dancer she was on the side of the superstar several months on stage in Las Vegas.

Incomparable mixture of dance, acrobatics and emotional singing. Oxa's fiery performance will pull everyone out of their comfort zones.
