Responsible for forging an entirely new sound by fusing jazz-funk with samba to create their unique genre “samba doido”, Azymuth are one of Brazil’s most influential bands and undoubtedly one of the world’s longest-running. Fifty years since their inception, the trio has released over thirty albums and continues to perform with the same energy and enthusiasm as their early days.
Their latest album Marca Passo marks a profound milestone as the first full-length release since the passing of founding drummer Ivan “Mamão“ Conti in 2023, following the earlier loss of keyboardist José Roberto Bertrami in 2012. Alex Malheiros, the sole remaining original member, sees his stewardship of the band’s musical legacy as his spiritual duty. He is joined by the equally devoted Dudu Viana on keyboards, known for his work with Roberto Menescal, Marcos Valle, and João Bosco. On drums is Renato Massa, who has collaborated with the likes of Marcos Valle and Ed Motta. Since their earliest recorded music, Azymuth have always been far greater than the sum of their parts. Beyond their influence on jazz and funk, Azymuth’s contribution to electronic music worldwide is undeniable. They have collaborated with artists like 4hero, Madlib, and Jazzanova, and been remixed by luminaries such as Theo Parrish, Ron Trent, Global Communication, and Daniel Maunick.
