Psicotrópicos Festival - DJ PATRICKTOR4

SUNDAY, MARCH 22 - 12H - 14H

Festsaal Kreuzberg - Am Flutgraben 2

The Brazilian artist Patrick Tor4 is the creator of Baile Tropical, an itinerant party that mixes tropical and Afro-Latin rhythms and has happened in over than 10 countries.

The DJ and producer introduces his new single #ONDANOVA, a song that marks the return of the multi-artist as a music producer, four years after the release of his last song, “Cai na Roda”. The single is sung by Brazilian vocalist Maria Flor, produced by Leo D. and is distributed by the French-Brazilian label Abatjour Records.

#ONDANOVA is the result of mixed musical influences by Patricktor4, flowing from the axe music of Bahia, the afrohouse of Martin Solveig and Bob Sinclair and the Rio de Janeiro “carioca” funk. “Feel my bass embracing you”, jokes Patrick about his new sound. “#ONDANOVA is a clear attempt to create an “authentic” Brazilian style house music, with strong elements like the percussive swing from Africa to the riffs of the funk keyboards crafted in the 90’s and the early axe music developed in the 80’s. We crafted a song to the dancefloor with a Brazilian accent and the tropical flavor”, he says.

Such mixed influence is the result of a life on the road,Patricktor4 has lived in many different Brazilian cities. Born in the state of Bahia, in the northeast of Brazil, the blackest state out of Africa,Patricktor4 has spent most of his 38 years back and forth the north and northeast of Brazil, where the African and Native influences are older and stronger. During his voyages he witnessed, heard and absolved influences of popular music from these places.

Patricktor4 is today one of the leading Brazilian DJs and producers. Head of “Baile Tropical”, an itinerant party that has already toured in over than 10 countries, the artist researches new trends of tropical, african, latin and brazilian music, always on the lookout to launch new talents. His event, created in 2010 in Belém do Pará, in the north of Brazil, has already surpassed the mark of 100 editions.

Patricktor4’s music, as the DJ is known, reflects the sounds played in the “Bailes” and seeks to reconnect old tradicional music styles to the new urban textures filled with electronic beats and popular ghetto rhytms, such as the cumbia, zouk, “brega” and samba.

This trend of the new tropical music is gaining popularity on dance floors of the world’s major cities. The release of the single is the beginning of a partnership with Abatjour that aims to take Patricktor4 and his sharp curatorship to showcase the new afrolatin music in the USA and Europe.

NEW BRAZILIAN MUSIC

OFFICIAL OPEN PARTY: FRIDAY, MARCH 20 - 22H30

Festsaal Kreuzberg - Am Flutgraben 2

DA MATTA is a Brazilian artist, club DJ, percussionist and live promoter and is a crucial filter and curator enabling the 'now' sound of Brazil to cross continents through two production enterprises: BOSSA FM (Berlin) and Yellow Noises (Portugal).

His DJ sets elevate, with one foot rooted in South American and black music culture, the other tapping to the electronic eccentricities local to the dancefloors of Europe. A self confessed vinyl addict, the tower of influence stems from both fresh and classic strands of boogie, disco, jazz, Brazilian funk, bossa soul and afro samba - blended and cut - often embued with electronic bleeps and bass designed squarely at the dancefloor.

Now living in one of Europe's burgeoning tropical music centres, Berlin, his love affair with the black soul of Brazil informs both his work as promoter and DJ. DA MATTA was raised in the bustling city of Rio De Janeiro; a musical playground for him, forever entranced by the sounds blaring out of every street gathering and beach shack. He set sail to the sun soaked southern Spanish European capital in 2011 becoming a resident DJ at the renowned El Junco nightclub and in 2016 found himself setting up shop in Europe's club capital, Berlin.

DA MATTA launched BOSSA FM back in 2016 which has become a go-to discovery portal for Brazilian music. In 2018 launched the production agency Yellow Noises LDA and has promoted European tours for names such Zeca Pagodinho, Maria Rita, Nando Reis, Martinho da Vila, Milton Nascimento, Gal Costa and the king of Latin music, Roberto Carlos.

FERRO

NEW WAVE / INDIE POP / BREGA

SUNDAY, MARCH 22

Festsaal Kreuzberg - Am Flutgraben 2

Romero Ferro represents the new generation of one of the most important popular genres of music from Pernambuco, known as “Brega” that pictures the daily life in a fairly honest and objective way and resists to the prejudice of a music coming from the suburbs.

His second and brand new album “FERRO” - released in August 2019 - proposes the perfect blend of Brega with New Wave and Indie Pop.

The videoclip of the song "Corpo em Brasa" features one of the key female artists of the moment, Duda Beat.

The artist competed to the BRAZILIAN MUSIC PRIZE with his first album "arsenic" (2016). In 2018 released two clips/singles from his next album: "Pra Te Conquistar" e "Acabar A Brincadeira". The first hit more than 500 thousand plays in 40 days, integrated 4 official playlists and ranked among the 50 most viral in the country by Spotify Brazil, in addition to winning the SP 2018 SIM prize as "gum hit". In 2019, released another single/clip "Corpo Em Brasa" featuring Duda Beat, a preview of what would come in his second disc named "FERRO".

"FERRO" is the second album of the artist Romero Ferro, and dives into the connection between elements of the New Wave, Indie Pop and Brega, three very rich aesthetic universes that have in their verve the striking tunes of the Synths, the androginia in the vocals, in addition to the pain, nostalgic and restart of the narratives of the Latin novels, so present in the themes of the Bolero, the Caribbean rhythm that guides these musical styles. From Beatles to Kraftwerk, past Queen, Reginaldo Rossi and Marina Lima, a solid mesh of references is created to sustain a sonority Pop-Brega, exciting, tropical and contemporary.

FERRO was the attraction of several TV programs, among them the “Sem Censura" and the “Encontro com Fátima Bernardes". Participated in special articles for VEJA Magazine (by Sergio Martins), Leda Nagle (on YouTube), and the newspaper project O Globo “Toca No Telhado”, and has been raising excellent reviews from journalists like Zeca Camargo/RJ, Mauro Ferreira/RJ and Hagmenon Brito/BA. The artist also participated in important festivals like the MOLOTOV/PE cocktail), Mada/RN, and RecBeat/PE.

Has Pop become unpolitical? Quite the opposite, according to author and radio host Lukasz Tomaszewski.

Just like the daily political discourse, Pop and Rap are increasingly shaped by linguistic brutalisation and reactionary positions. Homophobic and sexist lyrics keep finding their way into the charts.

However, more and more musicians worldwide are mobilising against right-wing agitation and exclusion. For WDR COSMO, Tomaszewski portrayed protagonists from Germany, Poland, the USA, Venezuela and Italy.

In Psicotrópicos Festival, he speaks with Jens Balzer and Oxa from Brazil.

How does the liberal music- and cultural scene in Brazil  experience the right-wing populist government of Jair Bolsonaro? And what strategies did they adopt in the fight against racism and homophobia?

Festsaal Kreuzberg - Am Flutgraben 2

In celebration of his 30 year career, DJ Noise holds a book signing event at Centro Cultural Olido São Paulo, January 30th, and Psicotrópicos Festival Berlin, March 22nd.

São Paulo, November 2019 - 32 year career portrayed in a work that highlights the professional career of one of the leading international names in electronic music from Belo Horizonte, Brazil ,”DJ Anderson Noise.”This is “Noise on the Moon - The Story of Dj Anderson Noise” (Natura Musical), which will be released on Centro Cultural Olido São Paulo, January 30th, and Psicotrópicos Festival Berlin, March 19th.

The project that includes the book signing party which was selected to receive sponsorship from Natura Music in the public notice dedicated to the state of Minas Gerais, through the State Law of Incentive for the Culture of Minas Gerais. "Natura Musical was created to value Brazilian music at different stages, fostering the renewal of production and valuing the preservation of our musical legacy."

Written throughout the year 2019, by journalist Claudia Assef, the biography “Noise on the moon - The Story of DJ Anderson Noise” is anchored in the life of the boy born into a humble family in Belo Horizonte who eventually became one of the most relevant names in Electronic music. But not only that.

“Writing a biography is almost like having a deep biography therapy session. There are moments of joy, of overcoming, of sadness, of failure, and a look with a very particular filter to the world, ”explains Claudia.

“Noise on the Moon“ plunges into the soul of the DJ, who even with little study, has become a techno heritage in Brazil. The book weaves Anderson's story with the development of Belo Horizonte's

night scene with memories of places that have marked the city, such as the mythical “The Great Brazilian Disaster” and the “Drosóphyla bar.”

Accumulating over 32 years of his career, Anderson Noise was one of those responsible for the development of electronic music in his hometown, where he organized over 40 major parties/events bearing his brand. But its impact was felt far beyond Belo Horizonte.

Anderson pioneered the creation of an online radio program in the early days of the internet (Radio Noise, UOL, 2002-2017),preceding the success of podcasts; and a YouTube channel before “youtubers” blew up .Also Brazil's first weekly Brazilian electronic music channel:TV Noise); He set up the Noise Music label (the oldest techno label in Brazil),that released over 200 releases. At the height of his career, in 2003, he made a historic closing set at Skol Beats, a milestone for many people to this day.

In addition to playing in virtually every Brazilian state, Anderson has travelled the world and his passport has more than 30 stamps from countries where he took his brand sound “Noise”. Among the most visited, England and Japan.

Not to mention things that we don't even dream that a DJ would be able to perform, such as playing with an orchestra in Sala São Paulo (the Bachiana Philharmonic, conducted by conductor João Carlos Martins) or working with one of his biggest idols, Milton Nascimento who sang one of the songs by the band “Nie Myer” which the DJ is a member of with Lelo Zanetti and Henrique Portugal, from Skank.

“Noise on the Moon”traces the relationship between this Mineiro and the terrestrial satellite, since Anderson was born on July 21, 1969, a few hours after man stepped on the moon.

With 164 pages, the book brings together testimonials from people who are part of the life of the DJ, collected from many hours of conversation and photographs that help put together the overall picture of the DJ and the development of the Minas Gerais electronic scene. In addition to a playlist hosted on the Internet, with more than 100 featured songs in this 30-year trajectory, which will be accessed by reading a QRCode printed on the datasheet, or by the link that directs the reader to this collection.

For the first time, Anderson opens up about his personal life and talks about sensitive topics such as alcoholism, depression and panic attacks for example:“These are very current topics and less discussed than they should be. Talking is a way of raising awareness, ”says the DJ.

The work, whose edition is bilingual, was written in Portuguese and English. “This enables the book to spread around the world over time,” emphasizes Noise.

Anderson is still active and is far from wanting to hang up his headphones.

Performs monthly in Sao Paulo, where he is a resident DJ at D-Edge.

Noise produced great collaborations in 2002 in the Salvador Carnaval with singer Daniela Mercury and placed a track on her electronic album. Also the fantastic project “João Carlos Martins & Anderson Noise” in Concert with the Bachiana Philharmonic Orchestra of São Paulo was performed in May of 2009 and in 2011 at Sala São Paulo. Another great collaboration was in 2013 with Anderson Noise & Jacob Bro. The band was formed in 1991 by the Bro Trio, a Danish Jazz Band. Then in 2016, Henrique Portugal and Lelo Zanetti from the band “Skank” and Anderson formed the Band ”Nie Myer“ that mixes Bossa Nova, Jazz and electronic music. They also recorded with Milton Nascimento in the song “Vikings" that’s on that album coming out soon on the Sony Label. In 2017 Anderson composed the official music for the Mineirão Stadium’s 52nd Anniversary Celebration. In 2019 "Quae Sera Tamem (Savassi By Night)" was composed in partnership with the Brazilian King of Pop, Lulu Santos, which is on the new album "Pra Sempre”.

Throughout his career Anderson has won dozens of awards. He was named the best DJ for two consecutive years by DJ Mag Brasil and for three years his name was on the Top 100 list of DJ Mag UK, arriving at number 26 in 2008. Currently Anderson is a resident DJ of the D-EDGE club (São Paulo) since its opening in 2000 and Cafe com Letras club in (Belo Horizonte).

The spicy verses coming from a female voice caught general  attention on the the song “Mandume”, released by Emicida in 2015. That was Drik Barbosa, young rapper who developed her freestyling signature at Batalha do Santa Cruz, a famous rap battle held in Sao Paulo, the lair of contemporary Brazilian rap  (from where names like Rashid, Projota and Emicida came from).

Born in São Paulo, Drik (pronounces as Drika) writes since she was 14. By going beyond just rhymes, she was invited to feature and sing in a couple different rap choruses. On doing that, she has collaborated with artists like Flow MC, Amiri, Marcello Gugu, Projota and DJ Caique. In 2013, with Emicida, she was featured in the song “Aos Olhos de uma Criança”, from “O Menino e o Mundo” movie soundtrack – an animated feature movie by Alê Abreu.

DRIK+BARBOSA+-+PSICOTR%C3%93PICOS+FESTIVAL+2020

It was in 2018 however that the singer-songwriter took the biggest step in her career. With her EP Espelho, which goes between rap and R&B, Drik better shaped her personality and could also show her power on stage. With Grou signing off as musical director, the 4 song EP was released by Laboratório Fantasma, featuring great names like Rincon Sapiência and Stefanie Roberta.

The São Paulo-born artist is preparing her first full length solo album, which is backed by Natura Musical. She released the first (and very powerful) demo of this new album with the single "Quem Tem Joga", where she went with a Brazilian funk style beat with singers Karol Conka and Gloria Groove. The music video for the single already surpassed 2 million views. "Rosas" was the second single of the album, a trap beat questioning sexism and racism in our current society (and inside the rap scene itself). "Liberdade", on the other hand, the third single now, talks about self love and the emancipation of women’s rights in our society.

During this time the first opportunities arose, and one of the most important milestones follows the invitation of Pedro Cardoso (Musician at “Ornatos Violeta” also known as Fish), his teacher at the time, to join an orchestra of electric guitars and basses, a project that stepped on stages as “Serralves em festa” (Porto), Hard Club (Porto) and Casa da Música (Porto).

The return to Brazilian roots comes a few years later when he joins the Bamba Social Orchestra as a vocalist, a project that brings together Portuguese-Brazilian musicians living in Porto and pays tribute to various classics of Brazilian music, recreating them and adding new sounds. Together, they launched the themes “Sorria” and “Cadê Cascais”, the last with the participation of Brazilian rapper Marcelo D2.

Since 2018 performing his solo work on stage, Tiago Nacarato has given numerous concerts throughout the country, having exhausted the large auditorium of the Belém Cultural Center (Lisbon), the Casa da Música Suggia Room (Porto) and the Convento São Francisco (Coimbra), among others.

At the end of 2018, he made his debut in Brazil, where he performed for sold out rooms entitled to a double session in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, as well as Fortaleza and Belo Horizonte.

The first single, “A Dança” was performed in April 2018, and the second single “Tempo”, featuring Salvador Sobral, in November. The last year released two more themes, and ”Sol de Inverno”, duet with Paulinho Moska ”Só Me Apetece Dançar”, with Ana Bacalhau. The debut album, entitled “Lugar Comum” was digitally released on September 16 last year, and was released in stores on October 18. The 2019 agenda included the return to Brazil, for concerts in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Campinas and Nova Friburgo, as well as the presence in three of the largest Portuguese national festivals: MEO Marés Vivas, NOS Alive and Crato Festival.

Monica Besser, 41, Brazilian-Deutsche singer songwriter, multi instrumentalist, owner of a unique strong voice and a strapping personality, at age 14 was already enchanting the Rio de Janeiro musical scene and, soon after that, touring throughout Brazil. Almost three decades on the road, she took part in countless musical projects and productions with renowned artists, producers and musicians all over the globe.

Her debut album was Monica Besser (2005), produced by Perfeito Fortuna, and its track “Vem Pra Ficar” was heard all over Brazil in the soundtrack of the TV Globo soap opera, “Beleza Pura” (2008), also aired in Portugal, Angola and Mozambique. Other 3 tracks (“Quero ser Feliz, “Só”,and “O Que Tem Feito?”) of her first album played on radios and TV shows in Brazil, including Nelson Motta's famous Sintonia Fina.

Her second official album - Fusion Rocks (2013), also independent and authorial album, recorded over the summer of 2013 in Rio de Janeiro, with a hand-picked dream team of musicians – the album’s production is hers, with the direction of Marcelo Bernardes. Manifold in languages and rhythms, the album comes with a 100% acoustic concept, and is a synthesis of years of research, travel and cultural exchange across Brazil, Europe and Nepal. The album was released in Berlin at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, HKW Copa da Cultura 2.0, on the Volksbühne Berlin, and on the Museumsuferfest/Frankfurt 2013 (as support band for Lenine and The Martin Fondse Orchestra).

Monica always had parallel bands and collaborations with artists from dance, circus and theater, among others, she authored the musical production of “Veridiana e Eu”, from Companhia do Teatro Intimo, directed by Renato Farias. Composed and performed the score for the short film “Beijos de Sal” by Fellipe Gamarano Barbosa, produced in New York and winner of several awards in Europe, Brazil and USA.
For feature-length film she composed and produced with Felipe Prazeres and Carlos Prazeres the original soundtrack of the film “Um Dia de Ontem” (starring Caco Ciocler), winning the Araucaria Award for best soundtrack at the Paraná Film Festival 2009. The film won other awards, including Best Film at the Beverly Hills Film Festival 2010.

She moved to Europe in 2008, based on Barcelona first, then now living in Berlin since 2010, she opened a whole new universe of studies and partnerships. 2020 completes 10 years of a deep dive into the universe of investigating Art and its role in the world, and she seems to start to bring out a pretty different approach and way of using it. Fusing with indigenous people, as well with all kinds of artists, educators, scientist and activists; she has been dedicated to deep investigating how to bring the natural intelligence of nature into Art. Monica is now returning to the public scenarios after four years in sabbatic studies into what she calls the Syntropic Art. Whatever this is.

BRAZILIAN ANTI-FASCIST CABARET

SUNDAY l MARCH 22, 2020

Festsaal Kreuzberg - Am Flutgraben 2

A bored Finnish girl tries to de-stress in a sauna. Her theater collective - all Brazilians except for her - is devising an extremely political show due to the situation in their home country. She is struggling. This is a very hard task for her. She looks for a strong political voice, alas, in vain. What can she say when her struggles are nothing compared to those of her counterparts?

Banana Pride™ is a cabaret of failure. Your host, an indigenous Carmen Miranda whose childhood dream was to be a blonde actress in Germany. With personal stories and a series of comical vignettes, we embrace the bizarre images that others have placed upon our bodies and bring it to the level of absurdity.

We denounce the reality that is hidden, ignored, or controlled under these clichés and stereotypes and this 2D "Bananaland". Banana Pride™ is a party. It’s an exaggeration. It’s an exaggerated party. It's an attempt to dance over a volcano, to keep up the happiness while trying to survive under fascism.

Each number of our cabaret tries to juggle the parallel realities of a genocide of indigenous people, the destruction of the Amazon, and the objectification of Latinas; while at the same time turning it into a carnival parade.

ABA NAIA COLLECTIVE

ABA NAIA is an international Berlin-based collective created in 2017 to investigate female comicality, as well as to draw attention to themes such as feminism, gender, heritage, sense of belonging and the decolonisation of the body. Some of the questions currently guiding our artistic research are: how can women produce comicality through their sexuality? What does our concept of post-porn clowning look like? Where is the border between comicality and awkwardness? How far can a woman go with a certain action?

WE CAN DO IT MOANING is the first project of ABA NAIA, which premiered in April 2018 in the “The Expo: A Showcase of Wahlberliner” at “English Theatre Berlin | International Performing Arts Center”. ABA NAIA returned to this festival in 2019 with their newest show: Banana Pride™, created in collaboration with writer-performer Paola Pilnik. The cofounders are Kysy Fischer (Brazil), Rafuska Marks (Brazil) and Teija Vaittinen (Finland).

DANCE PERFORMANCE BY MARI PAULA

SUNDAY l MARCH 22, 2020

Festsaal Kreuzberg - Am Flutgraben 2

Retrópica is a "cannibal" dance performance. It devours samba, bossa nova, taconeo and breaks with the imaginary that defends the culture as airtight. While neocolonialism, fanaticism, intolerance, immorality and fear run over us, Retrópica is a woman. It is hunger, it is fire, it is the extreme pleasure in the form of pure honey that still drains through the veins of Ecuador.

The hegemonic discourse, away from romantic ideas, tells that Brazil was "rediscovered" by an Iberian-Catholic treaty. That said, it was our America who gave birth to European modernity. However, we were soaked in a catechism, leaving us breastfeeding, thirsty, of a profane virgin. Our hero is the barbarian and has a woman's breasts, like the pasiegas, who provided their essence in milk to the children of power.

Immersed in the fissure of the nation of tropicalism, we continue aimlessly but with samba on our feet. The Matriarchate of Pindorama is reborn in this work and stages the re-meaning of everything that had to die for us to be born.
